8 urban innovation events to attend in 2018
Cities are engines of the economy, and places of connectivity, creativity and innovation. They are becoming innovation playgrounds where organisations of various forms and sizes and passionate individuals get together from time to time during events to share, learn, get inspired and create value.
Like every year, there are many exciting innovation events are happening in cities this year; some being more suitable for innovative entrepreneurs and start-ups, some for a broader audience. We created an exciting list of events taking place in Europe in 2018 for all the innovators out there. Here it comes:
Every year, the Startup Safari turns Berlin into an innovation playground by opening doors for its start-up ecosystem: start-ups, companies, VCs, accelerators, coworking spaces open their doors for attendees, create meaningful connections, and host inspirational talks. Attendees can register for sessions hosted by participating companies in their offices, travel around the city following their individual programs, interacting, learning and networking. Topics discussed are varies: fintech, urban tech, and blockchain amongst many others.

U4IoT Co-Creation Workshop for Smart Cities
Co-creation techniques are an important method for enabling smart city projects to be driven by the wants and needs of citizens and municipalities. U4IoT Co-Creation Workshop for Smart Cities is a four-day course and workshop, starting with two days of instruction on co-creation techniques for smart cities and methods for aligning Internet of Things projects with local stakeholders’ needs and priorities, delivered by experts from across Europe. During the second part of the course, participants will get the chance to apply the techniques learnt earlier in a real environment, in Carouge more specifically. The program is free and open to smart city employees, IoT experts, European LSP partners, and university students.

Brain Bar is Europe’s biggest festival on the future. This year, for the third time, it brings together the brightest minds and most innovative people from all over the globe to Hungary’s capital to discuss what’s to come. It will showcase more than 60 speakers including start-uppers, philosophers, scientists, big company CEO’s and many more, each bringing mind-blowing talks to life on topics such as love, health, happiness, food, artificial intelligence, technology, big data, geopolitics, cities, and the planet itself. Besides inspirational talks, a job fair and mastermind sessions welcome attendees.

For five whole days, WeMakeThe.City Festival will transform Amsterdam into one huge festival, with 600 local, national and international speakers, 150 locations, 25 theme conferences, 30 urban talks, 50 workshops, 30 city expeditions, 15 special events, 10 exhibitions, and 30,000 participants. The festival is an excellent opportunity to learn about the major urban challenges, the latest solutions to address issues such as health, climate, safety and affordable housing; share knowledge, get inspired, interact and innovate.

International Smart City Event
During the 2 days of the Smart City Event, there will be several keynote speeches, round table sessions, excursions, a “smart city challenge” and an “innovation playground”. Governments, corporates and knowledge institutions will come together to work on smart solutions for the city (of the future). In addition, experts from leading cities will be on stage to present their unique projects of smart cities, will share their successful stories and lessons learned during their projects. Over 800 people is expected from 30 different countries – a great opportunity to learn and share.

The annual Open Living Lab Days event includes interactive sessions, workshops, lively discussion panels with excursions and off-site visits with the aim of giving the participants a wider insight about models, theories and technologies related to Living Labs. Participants have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience from the leading experts on the subject and to network with other Living Lab enthusiasts. The day before the Open Living Labs Days, the Learning Lab Day will be held where interested participants can learn how to establish a Living Lab, how to run and sustain it, business models and best practices.

Where? Geneva, Switzerland
At this year’s URBACT City Festival, attendees can learn about different urban initiatives and projects, and will have a chance to attend various off-site visits to get a feel about recent urban developments in Lisbon. The discussion will provide answers to questions like how can we make our cities more equal and more welcoming to newcomers; how can we increase the attractiveness of our cities and fight unemployment; and how to make sure cities are prepared for the climate change and resilient. Urban innovators and practitioners, policymakers and representatives of local, regional and national authorities of cities of all sizes are welcome to join, learn and share.

Smart City Expo World Congress
This year’s SCEWC event will reflect on what makes a city liveable, what happens when “gentrification” changes the whole social character of a neighbourhood, and how sharing can transform the way it operates so that it can become more sustainable, resilient, inclusive and, of course, smarter with a focus on people. Five main topics will be discussed during the event: Digital Transformation, Urban Environment, Mobility, Governance & Finance, and Inclusive & Sharing Cities. More than 400 global innovators and influencers will be brought together with the purpose of generating synergies, sharing knowledge, participating in provocative discussions, promoting out of the box thinking, and inspiring calls of action.
